More than 20 million Americans visit chiropractors annually, seeking relief from a range of aches and pains, particularly neck and back pain and headaches.

According to the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA), chiropractics is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.  Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Chiropractors use spinal manipulation and alternative treatments, which generally are considered safe and effective for acute pain, which often results from moving furniture or getting tackled. Research has also shown chiropractics to be helpful in treating neck pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used both by chiropractors and practitioners of deep tissue massage, according to WebMD.

There remains, however, a major disagreement among health professionals about whether chiropractic treatment is an “essential” or “elective” medical treatment.

The American Medical Association casts a skeptical eye toward chiropractics, contending the treatment is overrated.  Chiropractors say the treatment is essential to good health and that a few bad people have given their profession a bad name and that doctors fear that money will be taken out of their pockets and put into those of chiropractors.

Dr. JC Smith, a noted chiropractor and author of “The Medical War Against Chiropractors,” argues the war between doctors and chiropractors is purely because of money and that the debate could get more intense because it allows for payments for chiropractors.

Dr. Winston Kyle Carhee Jr., founder and director of Pain 2 Wellness Center in Southwest Atlanta and current president of the ABCA, organizes chiropractic service at the Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless, is a member of the Foundation for Wellness Professionals and routinely speaks at local schools, businesses and gyms. He is also on the advisory board of the Cam Newton Foundation, which is committed to addressing the social, emotional, educational, and physical needs of youth.

Carhee also recently became a certified personal trainer through the International Association of Fitness Science, a program taught by fitness professional and bodybuilder Lee Haney, an 8-time Mr. Olympia.

As president of ABCA, his mission is to bring more African Americans into chiropractics and expand their presence in the industry. The ABCA will participate in the 2013 National Chiropractic Legislative Conference March 6-10 in Washington D.C. to lobby for chiropractic friendly legislation.

What's good for a truck driver’s neck, back, and shoulders?
First of all proper driving posture is a must; ears over shoulders and shoulders over hips. Also, make sure you are not slouching.  Sit on the lower part of you buttocks (where it meets your thigh). Also be sure not to round your shoulders (broad chest). Note Consistently Sitting in one position for longer than 2-3 hours will cause Degenerative Joint Disease or arthritis of spine. What should you do? Stretch regularly between hauls and get adjusted at least twice a week to prevent neck and shoulder problems. Make an appointment with a chiropractor today.

How do you treat foot and ankle after cellulitis for seniors?
Although, chiropractors do adjust extremity joints i.e. ankles, knees, elbows, and wrists. This might actually be outside of a chiropractor’s scope.I suggest you consult your medical doctor for this one.

I have consistent pain in the elbow area. At first, it only hurt when I moved a certain way, now it hurts all the time. I am wearing a sling at night. Very uncomfortable and it doesn't help very much.
This sounds like a classic joint misalignment problem. Chiropractors can align extremity joints and help you restore proper function of that joint. This protocol may involve physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise as well.

What can you do when you can't turn your neck to both sides?
This is called joint restriction. Joint restriction usually is a result of joint misalignment and/or joint degeneration. Both of which can be treated with joint mobilization and most importantly joint re-alignment. Again, proper therapeutic activities and physiotherapy (e-stim, hot-cold treatments, ultra-sound to muscles) may be necessary.

I stood in one of those weight loss shaking machines n now my ankle hurts. Can it be realigned?

I'm 42-year-old woman.  The center of my lower back hurts. I don't know if it's from exercise or sleeping on my old couch all the time. It also hurts when I am driving. I'm trying to have good posture by not slouching. What else can I do?
First, you should be examined by a Chiropractor, this may require x-rays. Proper posture is a must, both during leisure and during exercise. Re-align the joint, use good posture, start supervised rehab program.

What are some pointers of things to look for when picking a chiropractor?

Why do I pass gas during an adjustment to the back?  Also, how often should you do a back adjustment?
Nerves from the lumbar control the large intestine. Also, physically displacing bowel filled with gas can cause increase pressure to the sphincter muscle then parasympathetic nerve stimulates relaxation, which equals "passing gas". How often, depends on what stage of healing you are in. 1st Phase Acute (recent) injury usually requires three or more times per week. Second and Third stages require less frequent treatment one time a week to once a month. Then maintenance should be once a month.

Is it true that toxins or gas is released as a result of adjustment?
Yes.

How do you get your chiropractor to acknowledge where aches and pains are originating from when autoimmune diseases are diagnosed?

Why don't medical doctors recommend their patients to chiropractors?
Some do.  If they realized we effectively treat musculoskeletal injuries successfully without drugs or surgery and chiropractors has very high patient satisfaction ratings, they would refer more often.  I always refer my patients back to Medical Doctors after every phase of treatment (once a month).

Why do people have to keep going back to the chiropractor for "adjustments"?  It seems like they're not effective if you have to keep going back.
We are simply following the stages of healing.  Healing is a process and is not "instant". It takes time to heal. Re-exams should be given at least once a month.
